Analysis of a naturally occurring K99+ enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strain that fails to produce K99.

A spontaneously occurring field isolate of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli that was genotypically K99+ but phenotypically K99- was analyzed for the reason that it did not express K99. The defect, which was cis active, was located within an area 5' to the first gene required for K99 biogenesis and was the result of the deletion of a single base pair.

Structural studies on the Escherichia coli O101 lipopolysaccharide found in association with F41 and K99 fimbriae.

In this study it was shown that the O101 lipopolysaccharide isolated from Escherichia coli B41 did not contain an O-specific polysaccharide and that its sugar moiety is probably restricted to the core oligosaccharide. It is characterized by the presence of galactose, glucose, N-acetylglucosamine, heptose and 3-deoxy-D-manno-2-octulosonic acid and the fatty acid composition is typical of an Ente...

Characterization of the F41 fimbrial antigen of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli by using monoclonal antibodies.

We produced monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) from 23 different murine hybridoma cell lines against the F41 fimbrial antigen of bovine and porcine enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. Cell lines were created by fusing myeloma cells and spleen cells of mice that were immunized with either purified F41 or with Formalin-killed whole cells. The specificity of the MAbs to the F41 antigen was proven by enzym...

Group A Streptococcus produce pilus-like structures containing protective antigens and Lancefield T antigens.

Although pili have long been recognized in Gram-negative pathogens as important virulence factors involved in adhesion and invasion, very little is known about extended surface organelles in Gram-positive pathogens. Here we report that Group A Streptococcus (GAS), a Gram-positive human-specific pathogen that causes pharyngitis, impetigo, invasive disease, necrotizing fasciitis, and autoimmune s...

Passive immunity in cattle against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli: serologic evaluation of a bacterin containing K99 and F41 fimbriae in colostrum of vaccinated females and calf serum

A bacterin from enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), containing fimbriae K99 and F41, was produced and its capacity to induce anti-K99 and anti-F41 antibodies in colostrum of vaccinated cows and in calf serum, and the persistence of these antibodies in neonates were determined. Three experiments were performed on two commercial farms. In all experiments animals were allotted randomly to the...
